With Dick
Schaap.
Mostly known
as a sports journalist, Dick was a brilliant, humble man
who was friendly with
-- and had a funny anecdote about -- every athlete, politician
and comedian you can name.
One time
I was dressed as Moses to sing a parody about the actor
Charlton Heston, who had just been elected president of
the National Rifle Association. Heston famously portrayed
Moses in "The Ten Commandments", so naturally,
the parody I wrote was
"Let My People Load".
Gun owners, religion -- there was something there to offend
almost everyone. When the bit was over, the camera came
up on Dick, who was anchoring. He got the biggest laugh
of the night with his ad-lib, "The NRA, the Anti-Defamation
League and Moses Malone all called to complain."
